Track Review “OM”
So I feel like doing a review on this track. Mainly because this is new DOOM and he’s one of my musical idols and I’m that pumped he has new material coming out. I was much less familiar with Bishop Nehru before I heard about this collaboration. Upon further digging I found his mixtape, Nehruvia. Very solid 90’s boom-bap flavored hip hop mix tape. If your a Joey Bada$$ fan, you will be a Bishop Nehru fan. I almost hesitate after saying that because of how similar they are. In my mind, Nehru edges Joey out by a nose. Especially after Joey’s recent change in flow and tone of his voice.
Anyway, to the track. In typical DOOM fashion, we are started off with a voice sample that adds character and a little humor as well. There’s certainly an interesting beat on this one. It’s a textbook DOOM beat. Chopped and screwed, with clever samples tied in. It feels like a beat from DangerDoom, with the repetitive structure of something from Mmm..Food. There’s also a dark, futuristic vibe going on here. I don’t know why but the vocal sample reminds me of something that was taken from a Tim Burton film. I’m always going to be biased to DOOM’s production though.
As far as Nehru on this track I’m definitely pleased. He trades off verses with DOOM and holds his own. HIs vocals seem much louder than DOOM’s too. Maybe this is to shine a little more light on him as an MC, and to avoid him being swallowed/overlooked by DOOM’s presence. I’m enjoying this track much more than the first one that was released. This should be another solid collaboration for DOOM and Nehru. And just look at the artwork. It’s amazing. Give this shit a listen and buy it when it drops in September.
